Biography
Amy Sonheim holds a doctorate in British Nineteenth-Century Studies, focusing on illustrated texts, especially those written for children. She has published on the Pre-Raphaelite Arthur Hughes's illustrating of George MacDonald's fairy tales as well as Flannery O'Connor's inspiration from El Greco. She has published on David Small's response to childhood trauma explored in his graphic novel Stitches and the picture book The Gardener by his co-creator and spouse, Sarah Stewart.
Indeed, Sonheim delights most in examining doubled narratives鈥攙isual and verbal-- in picture books, having written on Christopher Meyers' Wings, David Wisniewski's Golem, and Where the Wild Things Are in her book Maurice Sendak. Currently, Sonheim is working on the book James Baldwin and Black Boyhood with 17c起草社区 history colleague Prof. Eric Washington.
These days, Sonheim's passion is connecting the liveliness of reading the world to the human art of writing, engaging others, as her students discover their own human voices for change, advocacy, and justice.
