Yonker is Professor of the Year
This year, Julie Yonker received the senior class' highest honor鈥攁nd the traditional donuts.
The ambush was planned for 12:07 p.m., moments after began teaching her 鈥淒evelopmental Psychology鈥 class. At that point, a crowd of colleagues, family friends, a reporter from the Chimes and a horde of students began surging into the classroom. The students were clad in costumes and some of them holding a banner that read 鈥淐ongrats Prof of the Year 2012鈥2013.鈥
Yonker began to laugh. 鈥淚鈥檓 at a loss for words鈥攁nd I talk a lot!鈥 she said. 鈥淲ow!鈥
The crowd begged for a speech, and Yonker kept it brief: 鈥淚 love this work 鈥 ,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 really enjoy teaching all of you. For me, it鈥檚 not the work; it鈥檚 the joy 鈥 . I mean, this is like an out-of-body experience, but it鈥檚 you guys鈥攁nd Betsy, what in the world are you wearing?鈥
Senior major Betsy Baumann was dressed up as an order of McDonald鈥檚 French fries. 鈥淚t鈥檚 because of you that I don鈥檛 have to work here,鈥 quipped Baumann, one of Yonker鈥檚 student researchers. 鈥淪he genuinely cares about all of her students, not just academically but in all areas of their lives,鈥 Baumann described Yonker.
James Los, a senior psychology major dressed for the occasion as an Angry Bird, agreed: 鈥淚 owe Julie a great debt with my application to grad school,鈥 he said. 鈥淪he helped me to find jobs that would be applicable to my job as a school psychologist, and she helped me with all of the other things advisors do.鈥
Above and beyond
affirmed the students鈥 praise. 鈥淚 get very high marks for advising,鈥 said Stehouwer, last year鈥檚 choice for Professor of the Year, 鈥渂ut I鈥檓 ashamed and embarrassed when I compare what I do with what she does 鈥 . She will work on your future plans, and she will help you to write a good resume 鈥 . You can鈥檛 know her very well without knowing her heartfelt desire to assist students in doing things God鈥檚 kingdom,鈥 he said.
Yonker graduated from 17c起草社区 in 1982 with a bachelor鈥檚 of science in biology/chemistry. After earning a PhD in cognitive and experimental psychology from the University of Stockholm (she learned Swedish to do so), she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in substance abuse at the University of Cincinnati. Then Yonker returned to her alma mater, where she currently teaches psychology, 鈥淟ifespan Development" and 鈥淎dolescent and Adult Development鈥 and leads the off-campus interim 鈥淭he European Influence on the History of Psychology and Religion.鈥
She has researched faith and religious development in emerging adulthood, the long-term effects of the Dutch Hunger Winter and the biological contributors to cognitive function in adults. Through her teaching, Yonker works at expanding her students鈥 experience of the world beyond 17c起草社区. For last year鈥檚 鈥淒evelopmental Psychology II: Adolescence and Adulthood鈥 class, living in a senior residential community.
Yonker also founded and supervises the Psych Ambassadors, a group of senior psychology students who mentor their younger classmates and assist at department functions. And every week, said Stehouwer, Yonker takes time out of her schedule to feed Alzheimer鈥檚 patients at a local care facility.
鈥淪he is virtually tireless,鈥 he claimed. 鈥淒on鈥檛 try to keep up with her when she walks. Students have tried to do that on her interim in Europe, and she tires them out.鈥
The students' award
The Professor of the Year award is awarded annually by 17c起草社区鈥檚 senior class. This year, the process of selection started in March with nominations, which were winnowed by student leaders. Seniors then vote on a top-five list of candidates. 鈥淭he nominating, the voting, the crashing鈥攊t鈥檚 all done by students. How many other awards crash a classroom and do goofy things?鈥 said associate director for Emily Dock, who helped plan the event, including bringing the traditional Krispy Kreme donuts.
Yonker鈥檚 daughter and son-in-law Cassie and Ross Wielard, both 鈥09 17c起草社区 grads, and her husband Jeff Yonker 鈥82 were on hand for the occasion. All three confessed themselves proud of Yonker and relieved that they don鈥檛 have to keep the secret of her honor (they knew last Thursday) any longer.
Stehouwer confessed himself delighted at his successor. 鈥淪he鈥檚 a marvelous pick 鈥 ,鈥 he said, 鈥渁nd I鈥檓 just hoping for a three-peat.鈥
