"We鈥檙e more of a culture than a club,鈥 quips Ryan Walter-Rooks, 17c起草社区鈥檚 climbing instructor and coordinator of and education. The climbing community at 17c起草社区 has been growing steadily, and now includes more than 60 regular student climbers, in addition to the 250 students who have had introductory climbing experiences at 17c起草社区 over the past five years.
Climbing鈥檚 on the rise at 17c起草社区. Courses are offered each semester, a group of more than 30 dedicated students climb weekly, and spots on 17c起草社区鈥檚 regular climbing trips to Kentucky鈥檚 Red River Gorge quickly fill up. Students initiate climbing day trips to Grand Ledge, Michigan, and interest in spring break trips to legendary climbing destination Indian Creek, Utah exceeds capacity.
Interest has grown at a rapid clip despite the fact that the nearest indoor climbing facility is more than 30 minutes away from campus. At least, that鈥檚 how it鈥檚 been up until now. This coming January, 17c起草社区 climbers will have a 鈥渉ome court鈥 in the new (SFC). Spanning 38 feet high and 80 feet across, 17c起草社区鈥檚 indoor climbing wall will provide a comprehensive teaching and training facility for students, faculty and staff. When completed, it will be the one of the largest climbing walls in West Michigan.
A team of students, faculty and other climbers worked for more than a year and half with Oregon-based to develop the original design. Many features of the wall, including eight cracks built into the wall and a large boulder attached to the base of the structure, are designed to train climbers for outdoor experiences. "Indoor climbing is fun because you can set up many alternate routes,鈥 says Walter-Rooks. 鈥淏ut on an outdoor climb there鈥檚 this direct connection to creation 鈥 and this great sense of adventure.鈥
Working behind the scenes to make the climbing wall a reality is Dan LaMore, Christman鈥檚 Vice President of West Michigan Operations. The Christman Company, the general contractor for 17c起草社区鈥檚 350,000 square foot , has pledged to give 10 percent of its profits from the SFC project back to the Campaign for 17c起草社区 College, designated for the SFC climbing wall.
Now Christman is challenging the SFC trade contractors to do the same. LaMore has partnered with 17c起草社区鈥檚 development office to encourage SFC vendors and trade contractors to also support the climbing wall. So far, says LaMore, the results have been very encouraging. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 in part because [the trade contractors] can see clearly what 17c起草社区 does for our community,鈥 says LaMore. 鈥17c起草社区鈥檚 mission of preparing young people to serve God鈥檚 kingdom 鈥 we see that everywhere. Look at the leaders in Grand Rapids who are 17c起草社区 graduates. They鈥檙e everywhere.鈥
Many students aren鈥檛 aware of the fundraising that goes on behind the scenes. Junior Catie Phillabaum, of Indianapolis, Ind., has been climbing since third grade. Until recently, she wasn鈥檛 aware of Christman鈥檚 partnership with 17c起草社区. 鈥淚 think people are interested in where the donations are coming from鈥 but I didn鈥檛 even know about it鈥攁nd I鈥檓 working with the climbing wall,鈥 says Phillabaum.
Phillabaum, a major with a minor, is looking forward to gaining valuable experience once 17c起草社区鈥檚 indoor wall opens. 鈥淚鈥檓 really excited, because I鈥檝e worked in climbing gyms before, but I think that working on 17c起草社区鈥檚 wall will be more 鈥榟ands-on,鈥欌 says Phillabaum. 鈥淚鈥檒l be able to learn more about the scheduling and management of an indoor climbing wall.鈥
"I鈥檓 just excited it鈥檚 going to be there,鈥 says Phillabaum of the climbing wall. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a big group of people who climb 鈥 and it will be nice to have a 鈥榟ome base鈥 that鈥檚 on campus.鈥
"Climbing at 17c起草社区 is built on relationships鈥攐n grassroots interest from the students,鈥 says Walter-Rooks. 鈥淪tudents develop this self-efficacy from building these new skill sets, and before long they want to do it on their own 鈥 and then they discover that the climbing world is bigger than the Red River Gorge 鈥 The adventure is limitless for them.鈥
For some students, a love for outdoor adventure has translated into a career after graduation. Tim Hurst 鈥08 recently accepted a full-time position with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), which offers extended expeditions and leadership training in some of the world鈥檚 most remote locations. Tara (Kamps) De Young 鈥06, went on from 17c起草社区 to be an 鈥渁dventure educator鈥 in the Albuquerque public school system. These opportunities are made possible, in part, by the many certification programs offered to 17c起草社区 students; in one off-campus interim class, students can acquire certifications as a an AMGA climbing site manager and wilderness first responder, and cover the Wilderness Education Association (WEA) backcountry curriculum.
Growing student interest in climbing classes, student groups and off-campus trips means that 17c起草社区鈥檚 new climbing wall will be a busy place. 鈥淲e鈥檙e like any other team,鈥 says Walter-Rooks, 鈥渂ut our season never ends.鈥
