A slammin' start to summer
Of all the camps available to high school basketball players, the 17c起草社区 Summer Slam was the one at the top of the Hudsonville (Mich.) Unity Christian boys鈥 team鈥檚 list.
Of all the camps available to high school basketball players, the 17c起草社区 was the one at the top of the Hudsonville (Mich.) Unity Christian boys鈥 team鈥檚 list.
鈥淭his was the one everybody wanted to do the most,鈥 said Unity Coach Scott Soodsma, whose team attended 17c起草社区鈥檚 inaugural team camp last year.
The sentiment was similar among Ken Hiskes鈥 players at South Christian (Cutlerville, Mich.). 鈥淚t was a great atmosphere for our kids last year,鈥 said Hiskes. 鈥淭he tournament was very well run, and we had the chance to play some really good teams.鈥
Showcasing the campus
The 17c起草社区 Summer Slam is a unique opportunity for 17c起草社区 to showcase the campus, in particular the new , according to 17c起草社区鈥檚 men鈥檚 basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. 鈥淲e couldn鈥檛 do this without the facilities that we have now and the huge commitment from the development office,鈥 he said.
High school basketball teams from around the country are offered the chance to play and stay on 17c起草社区鈥檚 campus for three days. 鈥17c起草社区 provides the facilities, food and lodging supplemented by generous donors,鈥 said Ken Erffmeyer, 17c起草社区鈥檚 vice president for advancement. 鈥淚t creates a great opportunity to bring students together and experience a taste of 17c起草社区.鈥
Last year 12 boys鈥 teams participated, including teams from as far away as Iowa and Colorado. This year the field was expanded to 16 teams from Massachusetts, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa along with several local high school teams.
鈥淭his is the best team camp that I鈥檝e been to,鈥 said Tri-unity Christian (Wyoming, Mich.) coach Mark Keeler. 鈥淭he competition is excellent.鈥
In fact, last year鈥檚 camp tournament champion Western Christian from Hull, Iowa, went on to win that state鈥檚 championship last winter.
鈥淭he response to the camp was incredible,鈥 said 17c起草社区 College coach Kevin VandeStreek. 鈥淚t鈥檚 better than I ever hoped for. Bringing some of these kids in from around the country is a neat thing. Kids and their parents get to see 17c起草社区 and what we have to offer鈥攎any of the kids last year had never been to 17c起草社区鈥檚 campus before.鈥
It also brings coaches together who at other times of the year may be adversaries or who have never met before. 鈥淚t was fun to talk to guys who do a similar thing but in another part of the country,鈥 said Hiskes.
Girls can play, too
Because of the success of the boys鈥 camp, a 12-team girls鈥 camp has also been added this year.
鈥淥bviously we鈥檙e excited to get these schools from different areas on campus,鈥 said 17c起草社区 women鈥檚 coach John Ross. 鈥淚 think this is a great opportunity for all of the schools to become more familiar with our campus, our players and our program.鈥
鈥淭his is also a great place for high school athletes to experience what it would be like to attend 17c起草社区,鈥 he said, 鈥渁nd for us to showcase arguably the finest facilities in all of Division III.鈥
Like the boys鈥 camp, the girls鈥 camp will feature a tournament matching teams from West Michigan with teams from as far away as Iowa and Illinois.
鈥淭he most challenging thing for us was finding a date,鈥 said Ross. The schedule of summer events in the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex is full, so squeezing in a weekend of games was difficult. Therefore the girls鈥 event takes place June 10-12 (immediately on the heels of the end of the school year for most high schools). The boys鈥 event is July 1-3.
鈥淚 think this is the best deal in the country right now,鈥 added Ross. 鈥淣ot only will the players get to play some great basketball, but they will have the opportunity to experience what it鈥檚 like to be at 17c起草社区 College.鈥
Tournament action is open to the public: spectators for the girls鈥 games are free; there is an admission charge for the boys. More information, including a list of teams attending and a detailed schedule of games, is available at .
