Kelly LeCoy came up with the idea while talking to the owner of a store on Wealthy Street: 鈥淪he had people coming in and wanting to sell their food products but not being able to because of the food law in Michigan. I thought, 鈥榃hy not create a kitchen that people could rent and use the space to be able to sell their products in stores?鈥欌

LeCoy called the idea 鈥淯ptown Kitchen and the Shop at Uptown Kitchen.鈥 A few months later, her business plan for that idea won the 17c起草社区 senior business major top honors in the 2011 Regional Business Plan Competition held Tuesday, April 13 at Grand Valley State University.

Riding via train back to Chicago, where she is interning through 17c起草社区鈥檚 semester program, LeCoy pondered what it was about her bizplan that swayed the judges: 鈥淚 think what gave it viability is that it was completely thought through,鈥 she said.

A total plan

17c起草社区 business professor agreed: 鈥淪he hit on all her points. She emphasized the market need. She analyzed the market. She developed a reasonable strategy. She provided detailed financial analysis. She presented an investment strategy,鈥 he said.

LeCoy鈥檚 business plan bested those of competitors from Grand Valley State University, Aquinas College, Cornerstone University, Davenport University, Hope College and Grand Rapids Community College. Her prize was $3,000 in seed money and in-kind professional consulting services to help further refine the plan.

LeCoy, an admitted foodie (鈥淚 am very passionate about food鈥) plans to take advantage of both the capital and the advice. She visualizes the original space as small鈥斺淭ypically you have a catering space, storage and a cooler鈥濃攁nd adaptable to the needs of different cooks. The operation would give a lift to start-up food purveyors: 鈥淚t takes away a lot of the overhead for them so that they can get their business started,鈥 LeCoy said.

The plan, LeCoy鈥檚 honors thesis, took a long time to refine鈥攁nd it went through many reviews by LeCoy鈥檚 professors, friends and even family. She worked closely with Medema, her advisor, and business professor Thomas Betts. 鈥淭hey walked me through my presentation,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat was definitely an advantage for me.鈥 17c起草社区鈥檚 re-envisioned , with its emphasis on experiential learning, was another big plus, she said.

Moving up, moving on

On March 22, LeCoy and senior Brian VanEck won the , and LeCoy felt ready to move on to regional competition. 鈥淚t was definitely a bigger challenge, but I was excited for it,鈥 she said. Several of LeCoy鈥檚 business professors were on hand, as were some family members, for the April 12 event: 鈥淲e all take great pride in her accomplishment,鈥 Medema said.

Now back in Chicago, she鈥檚 planning events for the Rogers Park Business Alliance, running through Millennium Park and Navy Pier, and hanging out with friends. 鈥淲e experience all the neighborhoods,鈥 she said. She鈥檚 also pondering the future following her May graduation. She loves the city. 鈥淚 always thought that maybe I would work in Chicago. I think I realize that my heart鈥檚 in Grand Rapids, and I鈥檓 coming back,鈥 she said. She鈥檚 not sure, yet, what she鈥檒l be doing. 鈥淚 would love to run Uptown Kitchen,鈥 she said.

Luke Richard from GVSU took second place, and Tom Olson and Chris Skurka of Aquinas College took 3rd place in the regional BizPlan.
