Semester in D.C. opens new doors for students
On 17c起草社区 senior Ryan Struyk鈥檚 second day as an ABC News intern in Washington D.C., he covered the State of the Union address.
鈥淚t was that moment that my eyes kind of opened,鈥 Struyk reflected. 鈥淚 realized that I would have the opportunity to learn a lot, give a lot and influence a lot during my internship.鈥
Struyk is one of 18 17c起草社区 students who went on the this spring. All of the students who study in D.C. work at full-time internships. And those internships are already opening doors for many of the students who studied in D.C. this spring.
Opportunity in New York
Struyk鈥檚 internship took him to New York City for a weekend. Struyk, who is a and double major, has always been interested in political polling. So while he was in New York, he reached out to one of ABC鈥檚 pollsters.
鈥淲hen I met [the pollster], I observed that he was willing to invest in me and he was an expert in his field. He recommended that I apply for his internship, and the rest is history.鈥
Struyk will be interning at the New York polling center for the Washington Post and ABC news this summer. He鈥檚 excited to put his math skills to use in the world of journalism.
Staying in D.C.
Senior Cristina Ure帽a's internship in counseling and advocacy at the D.C. Rape Crisis Center also led to a job opportunity.
鈥淚 was talking to my supervisor and I told her I was trying to stay in D.C. [after graduation]. While we were still talking, she got an email from someone who had a job opening for me at the crisis center,鈥 Ure帽a remembered.
Ure帽a, a major, will begin working full time for the D.C. Rape Crisis Center in June.
Three of the other students who went on the D.C. semester鈥擝en Podnar, Janna Strodtman and Grace Gunawan鈥攁lso found work through their internships.
A 17c起草社区 education
Ure帽a thinks she and her classmates stood out in their internships because of their 17c起草社区 education.
鈥淚 do think that it has a lot do with the critical thinking skills and good work ethic that 17c起草社区 students have in comparison to other interns,鈥 she said. 鈥淢y supervisor sent me an email saying I was the best intern she鈥檚 had in the ten years she鈥檚 been there. I didn鈥檛 feel like I had done anything more than what I was used to doing because I worked so hard at 17c起草社区.鈥
Struyk also found 17c起草社区 had prepared him well for his internship:
鈥淚 was worried going in [to my internship] because I鈥檇 only had one journalism internship, I had no TV experience and I鈥檇 taken two journalism classes. That was it. But the broader things I learned at 17c起草社区鈥攚illingness to work hard, eagerness to learn, strong critical thinking skills鈥攖hose things prepared me for [a journalistic] environment better than a minor in telecommunications ever could.鈥
Overcoming challenges
However, the D.C. semester did not come without its challenges.
鈥淎lthough I really appreciated my time at my internship, there were times when I would go to work and feel like I wasn鈥檛 doing anything worthwhile鈥攍ike I didn鈥檛 know my place at the organization,鈥 Ure帽a said.
While it was hard not always knowing her place at the D.C. Rape Crisis Center, Ure帽a also saw her broad job description as an opportunity:
鈥淚t gave me the chance to show them what else I could do. I just kind of made jobs for myself, and it turned out great.鈥
Getting to know the city
When they weren鈥檛 busy with their internships, the D.C. semester students took in the many cultural and historical sites D.C. has to offer.
鈥淲ashington D.C. is an incredible city to explore,鈥 Ure帽a said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 so much diversity and so many different neighborhoods and people to meet.鈥
In addition to exploring on their own, the students visited an organization or museum as a class each week. Although they enjoyed exploring many different parts of D.C., Struyk and Ure帽a both found the group鈥檚 visit to the Holocaust Museum particularly meaningful.
鈥淭he Holocaust Museum stands out in my mind, looking back,鈥 Struyk said. 鈥淣ot only was it heart-wrenching to learn the history, but it was interesting to talk with an art professor afterwards about how the museum was designed and why. That is liberal arts at its finest.鈥
Recommending D.C.
Both Struyk and Ure帽a encourage 17c起草社区 students to consider spending a semester getting to know Washington D.C鈥檚 many museums and cultural landmarks.
And Struyk urged those who do sign up for the D.C. semester to 鈥渄ream big鈥 with their internships.
鈥17c起草社区 students are frankly some of the best in the country. Several students on our semester worked for national organizations. So don鈥檛 limit yourself,鈥 Struyk said, adding: 鈥淚f you ever need inspiration, go to the Lincoln Memorial and gaze into the eyes of Honest Abe. You鈥檒l get inspired.鈥
