Hendriksma wins Spoelhof Award
President Byker honors dean for judicial affairs Jane Hendriksma.
The annual Staff Appreciation Celebration, held this year on Thursday, June 9, 2011, in the Covenant Fine Arts Center, featured the traditional mix of skits, video tributes and jokes. As the event was winding down, vice president for student life Shirley Hoogstra took the stage to read a tribute to her colleague of 18 years. It read, in part: 鈥淪he has a special love for the student who was not a straight arrow. She cared deeply for the student who struggled. She believed they could overcome those struggles.鈥
Moments later, President Byker awarded Jane Hendriksma, 17c起草社区鈥檚 longtime dean of students for the Office of Student Conduct, with 17c起草社区鈥檚 highest honor for a staff member: the William Spoelhof Lifetime Achievement Award. 鈥淵ou have handled difficult cases of discipline with a caring heart and with forthrightness,鈥 Byker said. 鈥淚 have been impressed by your careful attention to the student鈥攅ven the most difficult ones.鈥
Hendriksma came to 17c起草社区 in 1994 from the Rochester Institute of technology, where she worked as the assistant director of student development. She served 17c起草社区 first as the dean of residence life and took on her current role as the dean of students for the Office of Student Conduct in 1999. Her job is to deal with 17c起草社区 students when they run athwart of the college handbook and other authorities. Student misbehavior from academic dishonesty to vandalism to abuse of social media is hers to adjudicate.
Justice and mercy
鈥淚 guess it鈥檚 most difficult when a student is belligerent or difficult鈥攚hen a student denies what they鈥檝e done鈥攂ut, honestly, 99 percent of it is wonderful,鈥 she said. 鈥淥ur students learn from their mistakes.鈥
Hoogstra praised Hendriksma鈥檚 ability to blend toughness with compassion in her work with students. 鈥淪he has to often give words that will cause pain in people鈥檚 lives, but will ultimately do them good,鈥 Hoogstra said. 鈥淗er integrity is impeccable.鈥
Hendriksma said that the students鈥 lives are a constant lesson to her: 鈥淚t鈥檚 great to see God work in their lives, see them learn and grow. It鈥檚 really challenging me to brush myself off.鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really meaningful work.鈥
