Chimes recently won nine College Newspaper Contest awards from the . The total bested last year鈥檚 haul of seven awards for the newspaper.

鈥淚 would say it was a pleasure and a surprise to win so many because they actually took away categories this year鈥攁nd they only allowed one entrant per person per category,鈥 said Stephen Mulder, last year鈥檚 editor-in-chief of Chimes.

Chimes collected first place awards for its online edition,  a news story titled 鈥淪tudent Sits Next to Terror Suspect on Christmas Flight鈥 by Emma Slager;  feature page design by Katie Hall and Jackson Hall for 鈥淎BC鈥rand Rapids鈥 and best original cartoon for 鈥淚nsomnia鈥 by Lauren Kelly. The paper earned second place honors in investigative reporting for 鈥淔estival of Faith and Writing Celebrates 20 Years鈥 by Matthew Koh and for 鈥淔alling Leaves鈥 an in-house promotional ad by Mulder.

鈥淎bout half of them were won by people who had graduated, and the other half of them were won by students who are still on staff,鈥 said current editor-in-chief Amy Surbatovich. 鈥淚鈥檓 really proud of the work they all did.鈥 Surbatovich is optimistic that the honors will keep coming. 鈥淚 totally hope that we are going to beat Stephen Mulder鈥檚 score,鈥 she said, laughing.

鈥淚 hope she does,鈥 Mulder responded.
