Chase Froese remembered for her adventurous spirit

鈥淲ith her feet curled up around her and coffee cup in both hands, she would stare at you like you were the only person around.鈥

That鈥檚 the picture Luke Robinson painted for the enrollment management division on Monday morning as he paid tribute to his student worker Chase Froese, 20, a rising junior at 17c起草社区 College, who on Friday, July 31, drowned while swimming in Lake Michigan in Northwest Indiana. She was swimming with two friends from Illinois at the time, and officials say they may have gotten caught in a rip tide. Nearby beachgoers were able to rescue Chase鈥檚 friends.

Robinson, donning a bright orange shirt, said he chose his attire in honor of Froese鈥檚 bright personality.

鈥淐hase radiated joy. It came from her faith and strong family,鈥 said Robinson.

The 17c起草社区 community saw that faith manifest itself in so many ways through Froese鈥檚 life, especially in the way she cared for those around her.

鈥淐hase was one of those people who made 17c起草社区 home for me. I will never forget her beautiful laughter, her singing down the hall, her kind words, and her thought-provoking questions. It was truly a privilege to be her friend for all too short a season,鈥 said 17c起草社区 junior Jenna Griffin.

鈥淢any people go through life without thinking very deeply about what they do or who they interact with. But Chase was definitely not one of those people,鈥 said 17c起草社区 senior Hannah Blackwood, who met Chase this past January on an interim in L鈥橝bri, Switzerland. 鈥淐hase Froese had one of the most beautiful souls I had ever encountered.鈥

Lee Hardy, a philosophy professor at 17c起草社区 College had Froese in class and remembers her fondly:

鈥淐hase was just the kind of student a teacher prizes: she took her work seriously but herself lightly; in the face of challenging assignments she dug in, neither despairing of her abilities nor falling into ill-founded presumption. She was also a fine person: cheerful, genuine and adventurous.鈥

Hardy also organized the interim to Switzerland. He said Froese (a sophomore at the time) was younger than the other students on the program, but that was just like Chase: 鈥淪he was adventurous, eager for experience, always ready to grab an educational opportunity.鈥

鈥淏efore leaving, she told me she wanted to climb a few mountains,鈥 said Hardy. 鈥淚 thought to myself, 鈥榶ou may not know what you鈥檙e up against in the Alps, in the middle of winter, but that鈥檚 the spirit! I like that.鈥欌

That adventurous spirit led Froese to live life to the fullest.

鈥淭his picture (referring to a photo of Chase walking in the Ecosystem Preserve on a fall day) represents the Chase I will always remember鈥攁lways exploring, always thinking deeply, always pondering life and inviting others to do the same,鈥 said Griffin. 鈥淪he had a kind, adventurous, and free spirit. She was intelligent and compassionate, and she lived life so fully.

鈥淲e take comfort now knowing that she rests in the arms of Jesus, and I cannot wait until the day when we can explore eternity together.鈥

In one of her last Facebook posts on July 22, 2015, Chase Froese wrote:

鈥淧arting ways will always be sad, but it is good to know that there are always more adventures ahead.鈥

鈥淪he was wise beyond her years,鈥 wrote Blackwood. 鈥淗ow fitting that this was one of her last posts. Enjoy your new adventure Chase!鈥
