17c起草社区's Goldwater honors
17c起草社区 has three Goldwater Scholars and one honorable mention.
Once upon a time, junior chemistry major Nathan Romero thought he had to be a doctor to do science.
鈥淐lassic,鈥 responded junior biotechnology major Brandon Burkhart when he heard about Romero鈥檚 mistaken belief. Seems that Burkhart shared the misconception, as did junior chemistry major Lauren Manck and sophomore biology and biochem major Ryan Martinie.
Three plus one
Since coming to 17c起草社区 all four students have gone into scientific research alongside 17c起草社区 chemistry and biochemistry professors. And this month three of them鈥擱omero, Burkhart and Manck鈥攚ere named 2011 Goldwater Scholars. Martinie, a sophomore, earned a Goldwater honorable mention.
Manck said she was 鈥減leasantly surprised鈥 by the award, a response that all of the recipients echoed. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very exciting, and it鈥檚 a huge honor,鈥 Martinie said.
The Goldwater Scholarship, created by the and named for former U.S. senator Barry Goldwater, was established by Congress in 1986 to fund students studying the traditional sciences, mathematics and engineering.
Each institution may nominate four students for a Goldwater Scholarship, and 17c起草社区 is one of only two schools nationwide to receive recognition for all four nominated students in three successive years: 2009, 2010 and 2011.
17c起草社区 students make impressive Goldwater applicants, said chemistry professor Larry Louters, because they start doing research early: 鈥淭hey get exposed right away to a problem that鈥檚 unique鈥攋ust like in grad school 鈥 They鈥檙e actually generating knowledge, not just catching it from a textbook.鈥
The researchers
The scholars receive awards whose maximum is $7,500 for each of two successive years to help with tuition, fees, books and room and board. The money comes in handy, the students admitted, but they especially appreciate being recognized as researchers:
鈥淭here鈥檚 a kind of beauty, something in the science of creation that鈥檚 so complex. We even see that in each others鈥 research,鈥 said Romero, who also serves as 17c起草社区鈥檚 Beckman Scholar. He works with chemistry professor on building molecules that resemble the molecules found in nature or the pharmaceutical industry. 鈥淲e research new reactions, new ways to make these molecules,鈥 said Romero.
Manck works with chemistry professor on 鈥渕olecular tinkertoys,鈥 structures that construct themselves in solution. 鈥淥ur goal is to understand what鈥檚 going on as they put themselves together,鈥 she said.
Burkhart works with chemistry professor Roger DeKock on computational analysis of molecules, research that allows him to put 17c起草社区鈥檚 supercomputer Ohm through its paces. 鈥淢y research, it鈥檚 sort of 鈥渇urther knowledge,鈥 he said. 鈥淟ots of research sort of sets up other research until it鈥檚 Nobel Prize winning,鈥 he said, smiling.
Double duty
Martinie researches with two professors: chemistry professor , with whom he does enzymology research, and chemistry professor , with whom he works in the general field of computational chemistry; their applications involve electronic structure theory on small molecule systems.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a rock star,鈥 Romero said of Martinie, and Burkart agreed: 鈥淚 think he even pushed me this summer to do more, 鈥檆ause I could see he was so interested in it.鈥
They tried to describe the fascination that research has for the researcher: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not unlike people who like to do Sudokus or do puzzles. Research is a puzzle,鈥 Romero said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 being able to figure out what hasn鈥檛 been figured out before,鈥 said Manck.
What makes the research experience so gratifying, according to the students, is the opprtunity to work with science division faculty: 鈥淭he relationships that professors foster with students really stand out. That鈥檚 why we鈥檙e able to have such success," Romero said.
Martinie joked: 鈥淚 think they like to paint it as though we鈥檙e competing for the top positions, when actually they鈥檙e competing for the top students.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 very 17c起草社区ist,鈥 said Romero, laughing. 鈥淵ou didn鈥檛 choose me. I chose you.鈥
The Goldwater honorees are looking forward to the end of the semester, when they will join the other student researchers in the science division for a summer of discovery. (Manck will be researching at the University of Cadiz in Spain this summer through a program offered by Bucknell University.)
鈥淭here鈥檚 a whole culture of summer research,鈥 Martinie said.
