Update: An on-campus memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 17 at 4:30 p.m. in the 17c起草社区 Chapel.

鈥淗e lit up the room he was in and there was never a dull moment when Nick was around,鈥 said Jax Heil, Nick鈥檚 resident assistant his freshman year. 鈥淲hen he wasn鈥檛 there, everyone asked: 鈥榳here鈥檚 Nick?鈥 He was truly the life of the party.鈥

Nick Moll, 21, a junior at 17c起草社区, died on December 30, 2021, from injuries sustained in an assault that occurred on Christmas Eve morning in his hometown of Visalia, California.

鈥淭he world lost somebody who truly cannot be replaced,鈥 said Heil.

鈥淗e was unlike anyone else you could ever know,鈥 said Joey Snella, a close friend.

Always up for adventure

Nick鈥檚 life was full of adventure and spontaneity.

鈥淚 could walk into his room and always have a good time. He rarely said no to any idea. He was always ready for an adventure,鈥 said Jacob Siebenga, a close friend.

鈥淵ou never quite knew what conversation you were going to have with him, said Heil, 鈥渁nd it kept life so interesting.鈥

Perhaps Nick鈥檚 life looked so interesting, because he was so deeply invested in making the most out of it.

鈥淣ick taught me to lean into life,鈥 said Snella.

Finding joy in everything

鈥淗e gave every aspect of his life the time and attention that it deserved, no matter how much he was juggling,鈥 said Adrian Van Stee, a close friend.

And he juggled a lot.

鈥淣ick was the type of guy to do lots of things and do them really well,鈥 said Snella.

He worked at times 40 hours a week as a manager at Pet Supplies Plus, took a full credit load at 17c起草社区, played drums in his church band, and took care of the many animals he personally had, including at one time an aquarium full of fish, a habitat of lizards, and a tarantula.

And while he found joy in all of those things, he never shortchanged his friendships and his relationship with his girlfriend Baylee.

Everyone mattered

鈥淣ick cared deeply for everyone in his life and was always the first to ask me how I was doing or check in on me,鈥 said Van Stee.

鈥淗e had a unique care for others I haven鈥檛 seen before. He remembered key details about the stories of others,鈥 said Heil.

鈥淭he best thing about Nick was that I felt better about myself after meeting with him. That鈥檚 a very rare trait for anyone to have, especially for someone who is 20 years old,鈥 said Kevin Vande Streek, co-chair of the kinesiology department at 17c起草社区.

Van De Streek was assigned as Nick鈥檚 mentor during his freshman year. The requirement was that Nick meet with Vande Streek three or four times during the first semester. But the two hit it off and continued to meet monthly for the next two-and-a-half years.

鈥淗e was so engaging, so I couldn鈥檛 wait to meet with him,鈥 said Vande Streek. 鈥淚t was the highlight of my day.鈥

The two would consistently talk about faith, school, and family.

鈥淗e truly loved his parents,鈥 said Vande Streek. 鈥淗e spoke so highly of them, and he knew they loved him and supported him鈥攖hat was something that we talked about a lot鈥攚hat a great base for a young man to have.鈥

鈥淚 always thought he was going to be a millionaire. His dad taught him a lot about investment and finance stuff while he was in high school, and he loved his accounting classes at 17c起草社区,鈥 said Vande Streek. 鈥淗e could sell anything to anyone because he always had that happy, smirky grin. It was like he knew something you didn鈥檛 know, or he knew something you wanted to know.鈥

Not an easy road

But his positive demeanor wasn鈥檛 because Nick鈥檚 life was easy 鈥 he just refused to let anything, including his lengthy recovery from a severe car accident in January of 2021, steal his joy.

鈥淣ick had such a positive attitude,鈥 said Debra Snyder, his adviser and one of his accounting professors at 17c起草社区. 鈥淎fter his accident, he had to attend class virtually, then he had to wear a neck brace to class, but I never heard him complain. He laughed and joked with his friends in class and despite his situation, he stayed engaged.鈥

鈥淣ever once did he complain to me,鈥 said Snell. 鈥淣ick will always be remembered as a fighter and a lover of life and people.鈥

鈥淣ick鈥檚 infectious positivity and excitement paired with his deep love for others made him a joy to be around,鈥 said Van Stee.

Leaving a smile

And that is his legacy, and it lives on through the joy he spread, through the example he left. He found excitement, even in the mundane, and he made people smile.

鈥淎ll I expected [when I saw him] was to get a hug, a grin, and a story that left me full of joy for the rest of the day,鈥 said Heil.

鈥淚 remember meeting with him after he began working at the pet store nearby. As he was leaving my office, I was quite serious in encouraging him to do personal devotions, study hard, and walk on the straight and narrow,鈥 recalls Vande Streek. 鈥淗e walked to the door to leave and turned around and said, 鈥業f you ever want to buy a cat, let me know.鈥 I laughed all day about that.鈥

鈥淚 never once didn鈥檛 smile seeing him,鈥 said Snella.

鈥淣ick was a guy who, no matter who you asked, will be remembered by all those he crossed paths with,鈥 said Heil.

Nick is survived鈥痓y his parents Dane and Valerie; brothers Nathan and Case, grandparents, uncles and aunts, cousins, friends, and girlfriend, Baylee. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 8 at Central Valley Christian High School (5600 W. Tulare Ave., Visalia, California). The service will also be at 7 p.m. EST. Pastor Mary Hulst will host a gathering in the 17c起草社区 Chapel for all who would like to watch the livestream together.
