Alumni uKnight
17c起草社区 uses Facebook and other marketing tools as a way for alumni to reconnect to the college and old friends and classmates.
Tommy Heyboer remembers a standout moment from the six months he has worked as e-communications coordinator for the 17c起草社区 department of alumni and public relations: 鈥淚 was sending a Facebook message to 2,500 alumni, and I misspelled 鈥榓lumni鈥 in the subject line 鈥,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was a typo. I was working very fast.鈥
Heyboer was working to establish uKnight, an online community populated exclusively by 17c起草社区 alumni. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a really good networking tool,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e trying to give alumni another tool to try to re-connect with the college and with other alumni.鈥
The site, which launched in April, already has 3,000 subscribers. Like Facebook, uKnight鈥攚hose tagline is 鈥淯niting 17c起草社区 Alumni鈥濃攁llows 17c起草社区 alums to contact one another, post photos and join discussion groups dedicated to their particular interests.
Finding classmates
And uKnight has something Facebook doesn鈥檛: the 17c起草社区 alumni directory, which allows the college鈥檚 58,000 alumni鈥攊ncluding the newly graduated Class of 2009鈥攖o look each other up. 鈥淵ou can get very specific when you search,鈥 Heyboer said. 鈥淵ou can actually find your roommates, your classmates, the people you worked on Chimes with, and once you find them, you鈥檙e able to contact them.鈥
UKnight is not building a worldwide alumni network, but uncovering it, emphasized Norm Zylstra, 17c起草社区鈥檚 coordinator of student and young alumni programs: 鈥淭here are alums out there already, hungering to help those who come behind them,鈥 Zylstra said. 鈥淵ou hear story after story about young alums who went out and ran into 17c起草社区 people who were eager to help. And I think the idea is, these things happen by chance many times in the past. We want to be intentional鈥攏ot hope it happens; make it happen.鈥
Marriages and newcomers
The directory and the various groups on uKnight allow alumni to keep up on each other鈥檚 lives, 鈥淭hat girl who lived in that dorm beside you who鈥檚 really cute鈥攜ou can see if she鈥檚 married,鈥 Heyboer said, adding that the site is already a popular spot for posting baby pictures of future alumni.
UKnight also allows alumni to search for one another based on interests, hobbies, vocation and location. 鈥淲e鈥檙e allowing you to pair up with alumni that are similar to you,鈥 Heyboer said. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 go to Facebook and say, 鈥業 want to find someone who鈥檚 into photography who lives in Northern California.鈥 It allows you to find these people and begin a conversation with them or a relationship.
The uKnight community will be especially helpful to the 17c起草社区 alum who is relocating and searching for friends, a church and a job, Heyboer added. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the reason why people should sign up. I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 stretching anything to say a 17c起草社区 alum would be more willing to help someone from 17c起草社区 than somebody they鈥檝e never met 鈥 The networking is going to be more successful because you have this common bond.鈥
A private space
And the community is safe: 鈥淲e鈥檙e very interested in maintaining the privacy of our alumni information,鈥 Heyboer said. 鈥淭his protects against spam and people misusing sensitive information.鈥 UKnight is part of a larger social networking effort at 17c起草社区, said Luke Robinson, the Web manager in communications and marketing. 鈥淲e have friended or reached out to alumni communities and friend communities on Facebook or other alumni on Twitter,鈥 Robinson said. 鈥淩ight now, to be in conversation with all these groups and individuals, I would need more hours in the day.鈥
Spending a lot of hours in conversation with 17c起草社区 alumni is a major part of Heyboer鈥檚 job, and he鈥檚 liking what he鈥檚 hearing about uKnight: 鈥淭he fun part is getting e-mails back that say, 鈥楾hanks so much. I contacted one of my former roommates. It was really fun to reconnect with them.鈥欌
