All-campus Psalms
The whole 17c起草社区 community will be studying鈥攁nd praying鈥攖he Psalms through this year's all-campus Bible study.
鈥淗ear my prayer, oh Lord. Hear my cry,鈥 quoth Aaron Winkle. 鈥淲hy did you do this to me?鈥
Winkle, 17c起草社区鈥檚 associate chaplain was thinking aloud about how the Psalms address God: 鈥淭hey are dialogical,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey assume that God is talking, and now people are responding.鈥 He was also pondering the Psalms鈥 nature: 鈥淲hat I think is unique about the Psalms is they convey the full range of human experience 鈥,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hen we read the Psalms as a collection鈥攏o matter where we are or how we鈥檝e been, we can find ourselves.鈥
Winkle and the rest of the staff from the chaplain鈥檚 office will be guiding groups of 17c起草社区 students, faculty and staff鈥攁nd some alumni and friends of the college as well鈥攖o find themselves in the Psalms through the second-annual all-campus Bible study. The event is an attempt to re-capture the way Psalms have been used throughout church history, Winkle said. 鈥淧salms are prayed. Psalms are sung 鈥 They are a way of communicating with God.鈥
Prayer themes
The study kicks off the week of Monday, September 12, and the series will explore nine Psalms (1, 2, 3, 51, 103, 23, 137, 6, 73, 150)鈥攅ach devoted to a different facet of the believer鈥檚 conversation with God. All of the Psalm studies in the different on- and off-campus groups are designed to lead to prayer. Each highlighting a different prayer theme: 鈥淧raying Our Inattention,鈥 鈥淧raying Our Intimidation,鈥 鈥淧raying Our Sin,鈥 鈥淧raying Our Salvation,鈥 鈥淧raying Our Fear,鈥 鈥淧raying Our Hate,鈥 鈥淧raying Our Tears,鈥 鈥淧raying Our Doubt鈥 and 鈥淧raying Our Praise.鈥
Winkle hopes that studying the Psalms as prayer will expand 17c起草社区鈥檚 prayer vocabulary, especially that of 17c起草社区 students: 鈥淲ith students, the language they have with Psalms is, 鈥淚 praise you, I praise you, I praise you.鈥 鈥業 thank you, I thank you, I thank you.鈥 There鈥檚 not a lot of 鈥楪od, I鈥檓 sorry. I鈥檝e made a mistake,鈥 Winkle said. 鈥淭his is an invitation for all of us to be honest.鈥
Along with the scripture, the Psalms study will also use Psalms: Prayers of the Heart, a guide by Eugene Peterson. 鈥淚t鈥檚 actually hard to find a good Bible study book on the Psalms, so we were delighted to find this book of Peterson鈥檚,鈥 said 17c起草社区 Chaplain Mary Hulst. (An added benefit to the book, she said, was that it wasn鈥檛 expensive. 鈥淚t works well for students on a limited budget.鈥)
Organizers are hoping to repeat, and maybe even top, the success of last year鈥檚 Philippians study, which drew 1,500 participants. They鈥檇 also like to see the same variety in the study groups, which boasted every configuration of students, faculty, staff, alumni and were devoted to all kinds of affinities: foreign languages, scripture memorization, athletics, theater, nursing, psychology and even yoga.
Chant and drama
Hulst said she is seeing a lot of these groups being repeated this year, and she knows of one Psalms group dedicated to Gregorian chant. 鈥淭here鈥檚 been contact from church groups, saying, 鈥榃e want to partner with 17c起草社区 in this,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淚 think it will be really exciting to see how it all unfolds.鈥 She will be preaching on the featured Psalm every week in Chapel. 鈥淩ight now, my focus is on Psalm 1,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e been thinking how Psalm 1 shapes the whole canon of the Psalms.鈥
One new tie-in involves 17c起草社区鈥檚 theater department, which will be performing David: A Play with Psalms, an original work co-written by Joy-Elizabeth Lawrence and Amanda Ytzen. The show spotlights the less-than-heroic episodes in David鈥檚 life, said theater chair David Leugs: 鈥淭hese are the stories you haven鈥檛 heard,鈥 Leugs said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e showing the fact that he was human 鈥 . It鈥檚 a piece that will be a bit edgy and, hopefully, worshipful.鈥 The new play is a great way to connect with another college department, he said
The study organizers hope to provide more that a great campus event, Winkle said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping that, through knowing scripture better, we鈥檒l know God better.鈥 And that desire, he said, is one that came from the community itself. 鈥淥ne of the things we鈥檝e heard consistently is, 鈥業 want to study scripture. I want to read the Bible.鈥欌
